Riser cards
In order to insert an additional card into a Supermicro server, we will always need a so-called "tree" for a 1U server, referred to by the manufacturer as a Riser Card. If we choose a combination of chassis and motherboard in the "WIO" series for a 2U server, we will also need this component. The reason is simple, in these chassis, additional cards are not inserted vertically, but horizontally, which means they are not inserted directly into the given PCI-E slot, but into this tree, which changes the mounting angle by 90 degrees. The trees come in two basic versions, which we have to be careful about, the so-called left-hand side and right-hand side or LHS and RHS.
