Network Cards
In today's internet age, network cards are an integral part of most systems. Although they are often built into motherboards, more powerful dedicated cards are often a necessity for high-end systems. There are many different types, the most common being server cards with SFP+ ports. They are usually equipped with one to four ports, offering increased data throughput and overall higher reliability.
Metallic x Optical
Classic metal cards with RJ-45 achieve speeds of up to tens of Gb/s, using metal cables for transmission. In contrast, optical cards with SFP, QSFP ports and their plus variants use a medium for transmission, for which the inserted transceiver is adapted. Transceivers in optical variants achieve speeds in the order of hundreds of gigabits per second. Metal ones are usually used in environments where such high speeds are not needed or for communication over very short distances.
